OUR FIRST EMPEROR PENGUIN SPONSOR

PRESS RELEASE – For immediate release

EAST & WEST KENT FREEMASONS BECOME OUR FIRST EMPEROR PENGUIN SPONSOR

The ReQuest2021 project is delighted that the Freemasons of East & West Kent have donated £5,000 to become our first Emperor Penguin Sponsor.

Sir Ernest Shackleton himself was a Freemason, a member of Navy Lodge.  Sharing the same values as Scouting, Freemasonry provides a framework for personal development and service to others.  Although not a Freemason, Baden-Powell recognised the parallels with Scouting.  He wrote, “Our [ie, the Scouts] principles are closely allied with those of the Freemason, being those of Brotherhood and Service.”

Tony Harvey, a Kent Queen’s Scout and Freemason, said, “This is another example of collaboration between our two great organisations, one which will have a lasting impact on the lives of so many young people.”

Tony is providing the expedition’s Union Flag.  He explains, “Freemasons provided the flagpole on B-P’s campsite on Brownsea Island and I replace the flag every year.  So, I am delighted to gift to the expedition a Union Flag that for one year flew over B-P’s campsite.”

James Caird Sponsored Row-A-Thon

DONATE
REQUEST FUND – JustGiving

Our sponsored Row-A-Thon launched on Wednesday 14th April at Dulwich College with two high profile rowing machines either side of Shackleton’s famous James Caird lifeboat and lots of other rowers participating simultaneously on rowing machines remotely. The aim was to clock up 1500 kilometers (the equivalent of 800 nautical miles or 933 miles!) – the amazing distance covered by Sir Ernest Shackleton and five of his men on the Endurance expedition’s incredible boat journey.  They took 17 days to row from Elephant Island to the island of South Georgia so we set ourselves the same timescale for our event.

The Launch Event in the James Caird Hall
8 hours of continuous rowing by Scouting supporters
800 Nautical Miles from Elephant Island to South Georgia

We did it!

We completed the 800 nautical miles (1500km) in just under 17 days – precisely the same distance covered by Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men in the James Caird Lifeboat 105 years ago. A massive thanks to all our fantastic rowers with a special mention for Chris Barrow and to the Oratory School for their exceptional support.

The ReQuest2021 project team are immensely grateful to the James Caird Society and to Dulwich College for letting us launch the event at the prestigious James Caird Hall.

The row raised a grand total of £1167.23 towards the Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project so far but welcome any further donations on REQUEST FUND – JustGiving

All profits go to the Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project.

Fundraising Superstars!

Fantastic that Si & Seb have been awarded a Commissioner’s Commendation for “superstar fundraising and upholding amazing Scout values”.

These two have raised over £700 for the ReQuest2021 project so far with their 100 mile sail and 100 mile swim!

Silas and Seb are too young to go on the expedition themselves but have been selflessly fundraising for their fellow scouts to go.

One Year To Go!

If all goes to plan (covid willing) exactly twelve months from today the ReQuest2021 team will be setting sail from Ushuaia in Argentina at the foot of South America on a three week research expedition to Antarctica.
