PRESS RELEASE – SCOUTS CLIMATE QUEST EVENT
Held over the weekend of Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July 2020 Climate Quest was a virtual event hosted by Sevenoaks District in partnership with the Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project.
One of the key themes of the main Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctica project mission is Environment. Antarctica is a living environmental laboratory for Climate Change and Antarctic Wildlife. Climate Quest was put together to engage young people in these important issues.
To earn their Climate Quest Badge participants had to complete a minimum of 2 activities from each of the three different zones – Causes, Consequences and Take Action.
Around 300 people registered for the event and orders have been placed for somewhere in the region of 200 badges already! The activities are still available for other to take part in due course.

A Leap Year Fun Fundraising Treasure Hunt during February.
All 29 clues will be emailed out daily and can be solved from the comfort of your own armchair. No need to actually visit the treasure locations situated all around Kent. Unless you want to!
There are 4 weekly prizes of a Cupro Nickel Colour Antarctic Penguin Coin in a presentation box which will be awarded to the first person to email in the correct answers each week. The coins are Rockhopper, King, Adélie and Macaroni!
The Sterling Silver Black & White Cubic Zirconia Penguin Pendant Charm also in a presentation box will be awarded to the first person to complete all 28 clues plus send in the final answer on or after 29th February 2020.
A mininum donation of £5 to participate. (If any of your weekly answers are wrong you can donate another £5 to re-enter the following week and stay in the hunt!). To enter the treasure hunt late and catch up on the questions missed you can also donate £1 extra for every day you have missed.

Are you planning a trip to Antarctica in January 2022?
The Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project team are really keen to hear from any member of Scouting worldwide who may already potentially be planning to be in South Georgia (perhaps as part of an Antarctic Cruise?) on the 5th January 2022.
One of our secondary project objectives is to have a Scout in uniform at Shackleton’s grave to represent all Scouts and pay our respects on that day.

Scottish Scouts Selected
A huge congratulations to Emma Johnston and Sam Payne, both from Aberdeenshire, who have just joined the ReQuest2021 project team to represent Scotland!
During October 2019 the Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 project steering committee have been carefully selecting these two Scottish Scouts to join the project team and follow in the footsteps of Scouts Marr and Mooney who went on the original Quest Expedition with Shackleton back in 1921. There were 23 Scottish expressions of interest, 12 full applications submitted and finally these 2 were selected to go.
Emma is currently studying towards a degree in Genetics and Immunology and she is in the process of applying for a postgraduate course in primary education. She has an infectious energy and is clearly able to keep spirits up in the hardest of times which should ensure her role in the team is valued.
Alongside his university studies as a geography student, Sam also volunteers with the Royal Geographical Society as a Student Ambassador, presenting to secondary school and sixth form/college students about geography, why they should take it as an optional subject and where it can take them.
So, the ten strong #ReQuest2021 team will now be made up these two from Scotland aged between 18 & 25 and of the eight more already selected from Kent (four over 25 and four between 18 & 25). All the project team are dedicated to raising awareness of Scouting’s strong links with Sir Ernest Shackleton and Antarctica. Each team member will also have to undertake their own Antarctic Research Project.
In just over two years’ time, on 27th December 2021, the Kent Scouts #ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project team will be sailing from Ushuaia in Argentina to Antarctica. To that end they have partnered up with the Bark Europa, a hundred-year-old sailing vessel and the only tall ship with permission to enter Antarctic waters.
To account for the additional fundraising required the overall project target has now been amended to £110,000. To date the team have raised around £32,000 – so, they still have a huge amount more to raise during 2020! A Hot June Evening In Antarctica!
It was somewhat ironic that Kent Scouts chose to run its Evening In Antarctica on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far!

On Saturday 29th June guests gathered from around the County, and beyond, in the barn at Lower Grange Farm in Kent for an evening of presentations to learn all about the Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctica Project.
The guest speakers were Colin Walker (Scout Historian and Archivist), Joe Doherty (The first scout to ski to the South Pole and kite ski back) and the Honourable Alexandra Shackleton (Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Granddaughter) who is also one of the project’s three supporting patrons.

The project’s other two supporting patrons sent the team video messages – James
Ketchell, currently flying a gyrocopter all around the world and Felicity Aston
MBE, the first woman to ski to the South Pole.
In the Winter of 2021/22, the team of Scouts will be sailing on the Bark Europa Tall Ship from South America to Port Lockroy in Antarctica. Exactly 100 years after two Scouts sailed on Shackleton’s final Quest Expedition the project‘s objectives will be: –
- To participate as members of the crew on the Barque Europa on a voyage to Antarctica.
- For each of the participants to carry out an Antarctic research project and present the results upon return.
- To visit Port Lockroy base that was established by Scout James Marr and fly a Scout flag on Antarctica.
- To unveil an expedition plaque dedicated to Marr & Mooney at Gilwell Park and Port Lockroy in Antarctica.
- To involve the younger sections in join-in educational fun activities in the form of Antarctica In An Ice Box.
All four youth participants gave an overview of their Antarctic Research projects. Genevieve’s is a PHYSIOLOGICAL EXPERIMENT, Lucy’s is on CLIMATE CHANGE, Darcey’s is using PHOTOGRAPHY & ART and George’s is doing 3D ICEBERG SIMULATION. #MakeItHappen.
The top four Raffle prizes donated for the night were as follows:-

The team have fundraised £26,545 so far with a project target of £85,000. Gentoo penguin level sponsors (each donating over £250) to date include the Gallagher Group Ltd, the Deep-Sea Scouts and The Goodwin Sands Potholing Club.
Kent Scouts is one of the largest Scouting counties in the UK. Giving adventure to 17,112 young people and 5,439 adults across Kent.
