Friday 3rd June 2022 –TREK IN THE SNOW / DAMOY HUT
A very different podcast episode joining me (Alan Noake) on a long, arduous trek through the snow at Dorian Bay ending up at Damoy Hut. So, this was on the afternoon of 12th January 2022 after we had visited Port Lockroy in the morning. I have included warts ‘n’ all, the pain I went through walking through the snow, and all of the conversations and thoughts that I had along the way. It includes George’s now famous rant about penguins!

Gough Island
Commemorating Quest’s departure from Gough Island on 2nd June 1922. Filmed at Dulwich College by the James Caird Lifeboat. Obviously a different Shackleton expedition but the perfect setting to share details of this unique artefact. #REQUEST2021

West Kent Freemasons Help Again
On Friday 27th May 2022 West Kent Freemasons presented Alan Noake and Cathy Mummery with a further grant of £250 for the legacy REQUEST FUND. Alan and Cathy represented the REQUEST2021 team at a formal event at the Connaught Rooms and Grand Temple Freemasons’ Hall in London. Previously West Kent Freemasons donated £3500 along with East Kent Freemasons who donated a further £2500.

FOUR OPEN PLACES AVAILABLE TO EXPLORER SCOUTS IN KENT…
The REQUEST2021 team have recently discovered that Scout Marr’s Quest journey 100 years ago did not actually end in Plymouth on 16th September 1922 as we first thought but apparently just afterwards in Portsmouth. Therefore, we are planning to end our project in style by sailing from Plymouth to Portsmouth on a tall ship to commemorate the final days of the Shackleton-Rowett ‘Quest’ Expedition on the weekend of the 16th– 18th September 2022.

The four lucky Explorers finally chosen will be accompanied by three over 25s, two Network Scouts, two more Kent Scouts Explorers and an Explorer Scout from Devon plus of course the permanent Johanna Lucretia crew members.
To make the opportunity as accessible to as many people as possible the fee for the trip for Explorers will be highly subsidised by 80% due to an extremely generous grant from the Deep Sea Scouts. This brings it down to just £50* per Explorer for the weekend sailing. This includes all meals on board, wet weather gear and life jackets. *Note: Transport to and from Plymouth/Portsmouth is not included. Applicants must be aged 13.5+, and under 18, on 16th-18th Sep ‘22.
Participants will need to be in Plymouth by 6pm at the latest (having already eaten dinner) on Friday 16th September 2022 and we should finish in Portsmouth at around 4pm on Sunday 18th September 2022.

On 12th January, with Alan’s Covid isolation finally over, the whole team had the privilege of visiting the Port Lockroy, Antarctic base which was set up by James Marr and his team during Operation Tabarin in WW2. There is also the REQUEST interview with Mafu Lynch, from Tierra Del Fuego, who was one of the members of the permanent crew on the Bark Europa.

Tristan Da Cunha
Commemorating the Quest leaving the island of Tristan Da Cunha 25th May 1922 #REQUEST2021. Extracts from Scout Marr’s Into The Frozen South and from the Guardian May 1923, There are no longer any Scouts there however back then there was the Penguin Patrol.
Tristan da Cunha is one of the most isolated inhabited Islands in the world. It is situated in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, 1,700 miles west of Cape Town, 1,900 miles east of South America, and 1,500 miles south-south-west of St. Helena. The island is 38 square miles in area, a circular cone-like volcanic mountain with cliffs of 1,000-2,000 feet that plunge directly into the sea.
And a huge thanks to the wonderful students of St. Mary’s School, Tristan Da Cunha. In the absence of any Scouts these days on the Island they stepped up and held our Shackleton Scouts’ Own in their assembly today. This marks 100 years to the day that the Quest left Tristan Da Cunha, 25th May 1921. #REQUEST2021
